Direct Mount Pickup Cavities Corey James Custom Guitars would like to encourage you to try our unique direct mount pickup design. A direct mount pickup is typically mounted on two 'ledges' with a pocket of air under a good portion of the pickup. These ledges are at the front and the back of the pickup pocket, and part of one ledge is drilled through to make room for the pickup wire to pass into the body. The CJ's design is milled so that more than 70% of the pickup is in direct contact with the wood. This improves resonance and enhances overtones.
Take a look at the two small sub-pockets in the front side of the cavity. These will line up with the 2 screws pictured in the back of the Duncan pickup.
Next, look at the channel that is cut across the back area of the pocket - that channel is in line with the pickup's adjustable pole pieces.
On every guitar that has a top wood I begin the pickup routing process before the two pieces are joined. Starting with the back wood I pre-route a wire channel. Finally, one hole will be drilled straight into the floor of the cavity to hit the wire trough.
This process is very precise and makes for a very clean look in not only the pickup cavity but the control cavity as well, since the pre-routed channel is small and controlled.
